Where to drive in Mauritius

You may wonder if you really need a car in Mauritius. After all, at just 40 miles long and 30 miles wide it’s a small island. But the public bus network can be slow and tourist taxis expensive. Plus, there are sights such as the spectacular rock formation Pont Naturel that are only accessible by car. So it’s no surprise that many travellers choose to hire a low-cost car to get about during their stay. Make the most of this tropical paradise by renting a convertible or open-topped Jeep. 

Where to go? It’s tempting just to pick a beach and spend your days basking in the sunshine. But the compact size of Mauritius makes it easy to drive to one spot for lunch and another for sundowners – and it would be a shame to leave without seeing its stunning waterfalls and famous striped sand dunes. 

Let your mood guide you when it comes to picking destinations. The north side of the island has the biggest variety of beaches and is known for the nightlife, shopping and restaurants centred around the Grand Baie area. For spectacular sunsets, head west, home to the busy capital Port Louis as well as some of the island’s landmark beaches, including Flic-en-Flac, where you’ll find snorkelling and scuba hire, the rugged Le Morne Peninsula, and dolphin-studded Turtle Bay.

Those looking for adventure will love Mauritius’ east coast, with its dramatic scenery including the Black River Gorges National Park. Take one of the many hiking or mountain biking trails through the park to see tortoises, parrots and waterfalls such as the Chamarel, where adrenalin junkies abseil a drop of around 312ft. Don’t miss the Seven Coloured Earths either. These ancient sand dunes, striped with black, red and even purple sand, are a must-see.

The south coast is the wildest and most untouched part of the island and ideal for travellers looking to get away from it all. Doze away the day on the unspoilt sands of Bel Ombre or Chemin Grenier or grab your diving gear to explore Blue Bay Marine Park, home to 50 different species of coral.
